South Coast Landscapes will share our top five fast growing hedges to plant for privacy. Many people will plant hedges for the aesthetic looks that they offer but we will share with you the practical purpose of hedges. These hedges will give you the height you need to act as a boundary fence, privacy screen from nosey neighbours and an added windbreak.

One. The Lilly Pilly

This is a popular choice in Australian gardens for its beautiful glossy green leaves with a pinky tinge of colour and it’s a hardy native plant that will last in elements of the Illawarra, NSW. This fast growing plant can grow to around 5 meters high but can be maintained at a shorter heigh of your desire.

Two. Bamboo

As a landscaper in the Illawarra, Bamboo is a favourite hedge for us that we get many clients wanting to take advantage of. It is one of the most hardy choices of hedging, perfect for screening because its fast growing, dense and bushy. When selecting a type of Bamboo for hedges its best to select a “clumpy type”. This means it will not spread underground but stays growing in the same spot, keeping your privacy. This type of bamboo hedging can come in many sizes which means it can be grown to suit your situation.

Three. Magnolia “Little Gem”

It’s called a “Little Gem” for a reason. This dwarf variety of Magnolia is beautiful to look at with its large white flowers and skinny dark green leaves. It is dense growing, hardy and a reliable plant that is mostly pest and disease free. It can grow to 5 meters high and 2.5 wide, not such a dwarf after all.

Who wouldn’t love this little gem with general low maintenance and the benefit white flowers in Summer.

Four. Murraya

The Murraya is dense hedge with glossy dark green leaves making it perfect for screening and privacy. When the Murraya flowers it’s not only stunning to look at but has a sweet orange bloom scent making a fantastic attribute to your garden. It can grow up to 3 meters high and thrives best in warmer weather such as the beautiful Illawarra, NSW. You will find that Murraya’s keep their shape well without too much pruning.

Five. Photinia -Red Robin

It’s hardly surprising that Photinia is one of the most popular hedging plants in Australia. It provides a dense screen for privacy and year round vibrant foliage and the Red Robing variety grows around 2 meters high. It’s a drought resistant, hardy plant and the new foliage is vibrant red and mature leaves are a glossy green, which has a stunning contrast. It makes it a winner every time for us.

Growing hedges is a perfect way to create a natural privacy between you and your neighbours even if you are lucky enough to have a good relationship with them. We hope our 5 fast growing hedges give you enough information about what would be best for your garden.
